The eduComponents team is pleased to announce the release of
ECLecture
1.2 and ECAssignmentBox 1.3.
ECLecture 1.2
=============
About this release
- Inherits from ECFolder (from the ECAssignmentBox
product), if
available. This enables the use of ECLecture as a
top-level folder
for a course with the statistics and assignments
listing functions
from ECFolder.
- Internal registration support: If you enter
"ecl_register" into
the Registration link field, ECLecture will handle
registration to
the course. Users who want to register must be known
to Plone. You
must also set an Associated group in ECLecture.
About ECLecture
ECLecture is a Plone product for managing lectures,
seminars and
other courses.
ECLecture is licensed under the GPL and is freely
available from:
.org/products/eclecture/>
ECAssignmentBox 1.3
===================
About this release
- ECFolders and assignment boxes now have an
"analysis" tab which
provides more information about contained assignments,
e.g., number
of attempts users needed for an assignment or number of
submissions
per day.
- The "assignments (full)" view (shows the full
text of all
assignments on one page) is now integrated in the
"assignments" tab.
- New content type ECAssignmentTask, which can be used to
build a
repository of assignments; ECAssignmentTask objects can
be
referenced from ECAssignmentBoxes.
- If an assignment box is located inside an ECLecture
object which
requires registration, submissions are only allowed for
users
enrolled in the course.
About ECAssignmentBox
ECAssignmentBox is a Plone product which allows the
creation,
submission and grading of online assignments (exercises,
homework),
both for traditional on-site courses and for e-learning.
ECAssignmentBox is licensed under the GPL and is freely
available
from:
<http://
plone.org/products/ecassignmentbox>
The basic idea is that teachers create assignment boxes
into which
students submit their answers or solutions. The student
submissions
are then put through a number of workflow states,
typically submitted,
accepted and graded. The teacher can view the
submissions, assign a
grade and add feedback. The assignment workflow is
designed to
accommodate different processes.
Assignment boxes can be grouped together using ECFolders,
which
provide specialized view templates and statistics for the
assignments
they contain. ECFolders can be nested. You can use them
to
represent, for example, courses and weekly worksheets.

I don't know if I asked before, but how does EC* Plone
products
(would/could/should) compare with/complement SchoolTool ?

The goals and the means of the eduComponents and SchoolTool
are quite
different. From the SchoolTool Web site: "SchoolTool
is not a framework
for teaching content, it is a framework for school
administration." The
goal of the eduComponents, on the other hand, is to offer an
alternative
to regular learning managment systems (LMS) like Blackboard
or
Moodle. [1]
The technical approach is also different: SchoolTool is a
Zope 3
application, while the eduComponents are regular Plone
products.
So, based on the functionality, you could see them as
complementary, but
they run on different platforms.
Greetings

Frankly, I don't think Plone will run on Zope 3 anytime
soon.
Concerning the other point, see below.

I see what you mean, but on the conceptual and architectural
levels, the
approaches of SchoolTool and the eduComponents are really
very
different. The important point about the eduComponents is
that you can
pick just the components you need and mix and match them
with other
products, all on the basis of a general-purpose CMS, which
gives you the
basic content management functionality, workflows, user
management,
etc. AFAICS, SchoolTool takes the more traditional approach
of an
"integrated" application.
So, if you need additional functions, the eduComponents
approach would
be to use a Plone product that provides this function. For
example,
courses managed with ECLecture often contain reading
lists--we don't
need to re-implement bibliography management, just use
CMFBibliographyAT. Of course, in some cases you may need
tighter
integration, e.g., to combine ECLecture and Booking, but
that wouldn't
really be difficult.

Well, thanks for you interest!
