Windows Messenger cannot log in to ekiga.net SIP service

Hello, all,

I've been trying to use Ekiga to communicate with Windows
Messenger
clients, with varied success.

Communication with one person works fine, but another (who
uses a
different ISP) always gets the following message when he
starts the WM
session:

"You have been signed out of SIP Communications
Service because that
service have been temporarily shut down. Please try again
later."

We've tried various changes in configuration on the WM
client
end--enabling UPnP on the router, disabling local WIndows
firewall,
disabling Norton Internet Worm protection, connecting
directly to the
net without the router--but the error message persists.

Could it be that the ISP is blocking something? How can I
check if this
is the case? Should I try openning specific ports on the
router on the
Windows end of the line?

If it is indeed an ISP problem, how could I get around it?
Perhaps by
running some additional service here on my GNU/Linux box?
Setting up a
VPN?

Many thanks in advance for your help, and for a great free
application.

Greetings,
Andrew Green

Do I dream or are you asking for our help to fix an issue on
the windows
messenger side ?

Try to use the win32 port of ekiga, see if you can make it
work. At
least if it doesn't we'll have a chance to be able to
help.

I'm asking for ideas as to how to make Ekiga-WM
communication work, and
possible reasons it works only intermittently for me.

This list is, I think, a fine place to make such a request,
because...

1)

As far as I can tell, the problem may be related to an
ISP's setup; if
that is the case, then isn't it possible that a similar
problem would
occure if Ekiga were being used with that ISP instead of WM?
If that is
the case, then the issue is of interest to the Ekiga
community.

2)

While it's true that the problem may only be with WM or
some other
propietary technology, free software has to interact with
and take into
account buggy, incomplete propietary software all the time.
Free
software web applications bend over backwards to deal with
Internet
Explorer, as does OpenOffice.org to read and write files in
closed MS
formats. Even programs that use simple, open protocols such
as FTP take
special measures to interoperate with buggy MS products.

If Ekiga and the ekiga.net service aim to allow users to
call propietary
SIP phones, then it makes sense that the project at least be
aware of
typical problems in interactions with the most common
propietary
applications. If this is a WM or a Windows issue, then Ekiga
might
consider suggesting solutions, creating a workaround,
mentioning the
problem in the documentation, or, at the very least,
analysing the
situation with a view to understanding what goes wrong.

OK, where can I get it?

Oops... I just noticed the URL for snapshots in your post.
Sorry.

I agree with this. However, ekiga.net is running SER.
And SER has been reported to work with Windows Messenger.
However, old versions of Windows Messenger have bugs.

Are you running a recent enough version?

Damien

Version 5.1, just downloaded from Microsoft. As I
mentionned, with one
person, Ekiga-WM communication works fine, and with another,
SIP
registration fails. In both cases, it's the same version of
WM, but a
different ISP. Another possibility that occured to me is
that some
spyware or other malware is blocking things.

If you can give me a few pointers as to how to investigate
what the
problem may be (ISP blocking, spyware, WM or Winodws bug,
etc.) I'd be
more than willing to try.

The ISP of the person whose SIP connection doesn't work is
videotron.ca.

Many thanks in advance,
Andrew

The system has Norton antivirus installed. We tried
temporarily
disabling Norton Internet Worm Protection, part of the
Norton antivirus
setup, but it didn't help.
