Thread: /var/spool/qmailscan/tmp and /var/spool/qmailscan/working

Hi,
I have the problem that on my server it has happened before
that
because of an unfortunate setup /var ran out of space and
the
qmail processes stopped. Now I have the impression that when
I made
space and restarted the qmail services, some of the files
in /var/spool/qmailscan/tmp and /var/spool/qmailscan/working
seemed to
not be processed any more and stayed there forever. I assume
that these
are just copies of email in the queue and I could safely
delete them
but before I end up losing plenty of email, I wanted to make
sure. Can
I safely purge these 2 directories without risking data
loss? If not,
is there a simple way of recovering emails that are stuck in
there?

Cheers,
Christian

Hi

You should stop qmail and wait until all the active
connections are
close properly, then you can safely remove purge those
directories,
and restart qmail.

...or even more conservatively just rely on
"qmail-scanner-queue.pl -z"
to purge it for you. Old files are meant to be cleaned up
that way. Of
course, if you need the space *NOW* - then Salvatore is
spot-on.

I did as told but see a lot of errors of the sort

X-Qmail-Scanner-1.25st:[mail119046351171828276] Unable to
open pipe
to /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue [65] (#4.3.0) -
X-Qmail-Scanner-1.25st:[mail119046351171828276] Unable to
close pipe
to /var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue [65] (#4.3.0) - Illegal seek

now. Is this a result of me purging the directories? The
strange thing
is that even if I undo it and these files are there and have
correct
permissions, I still get the error message.

Cheers,
Christian

I purged the directories meanwhile and restarted everything.
However,
the directories keep growing sometimes at a rapid rate. The
strange
thing is that I can check
/var/spool/qmailscan/qmail-queue.log, find an
entry like

Thu, 27 Sep 2007 06:38:22 EST:2609: SA: yup, this smells
like SPAM -
hits=6.4/4.2/4.2 - tagging message... Thu, 27 Sep 2007
06:38:22
EST:2609: SA: finished scan in 6.022031 secs - hits=6.4/4.2
Thu, 27 Sep
2007 06:38:22 EST:2609: p_s: finished scan in 0.022091 secs
Thu, 27 Sep
2007 06:38:22 EST:2609: ini_sc: finished scan of
"/var/spool/qmailscan/tmp/mail11908930947182609"..
. Thu, 27 Sep 2007
06:38:22 EST:2609: ------ Process 2609 finished. Total of
7.881787 secs

However, if I check for
/var/spool/qmailscan/tmp/mail11908930947182609
that directory still exists and there are files in it.
Should these
files not be deleted once they aren't needed any more? Any
hints why
they are not getting deleted?

Cheers,
Christian

Of course those files and directories shouls be deleted when

qmail-scanner finish processing them.

In version 1.25st, this is the code thar removes those files
and directories:

   system("$rm_binary -rf $ENV{'TMPDIR'}/
$scandir/$wmaildir/new/$file_id") if ($DEBUG < 100
&& $file_id ne "");
