How to get the localization files to work? (dev8)

Hi,
I'm new to this mailing list and the whole localization
thing, so i need 
a little help here 

I have translated a bit of the finnish localization and now
i am 
desperately trying to get the new (unfinished) language file
to work. I 
have modified the init.php. I now have finnish as available
language in 
preferences and i changed the 'APP_DEFAULT_LOCALE' to
fi_FI.

The strings that i have translated just won't show up on my
local 
eventum server? What do i do?

Im using XAMPP (apache 2.0 & PHP 5.2.0), Gettext-module
is active if i 
even need that.
