Intel Vs. AMD?

Hello,

I currently run FC4 on a P4 system that I built 3 years ago.
I'm
planning to build a new system before the end of the year
and I wonder
which CPU should I use? I know intel has the
"performance crown" and
AMD aint saying much, even on the verge of the release of
their new
native quad core processor. Which makes me wonder if AMD has
given up
on standard benchmarks? I work on database technology
(informix) and I
know standard benchmarks don't mean nothing (AT ALL).

I guess the question I want to ask is has someone tried an
AMD cpu
rated inferior on a standard benchmark, and found it to be
faster than
the intel cpu which won the the benchmark?

The machine I plan to build is not just for fun. I'm a
photographer
and plan to run PhotoShop CS3 and DxO optics over WINE, in
addition to
my web, email, file (macs and pcs) and print server, plus a
5TB raid
5. Therefore performance do matter, but I'm suspicious of
standard
benchmarks for cpus, based on my experience in the database
world and
the fact that AMD appears to have given up on them. Any
advice?

To be honest I don't much pay attention to the CPU speed
since with
Linux there difference is negligible. I've got 4 year old
systems
running next to brand new boxes and except for memory issues
the old
box and new box respond in a blink of an eye. I'm sure if I
measured
it there'd be a noticable improvement but to me fast is just
plain
fast. The amount of RAM has a much bigger impact on system
performance
than CPUs.

I'm currenlty running a mix of AMD and Intel chips and have
seen no
difference in performance between them. The AMD MBs did have
fewer
compatability and driver issues, not because of the CPU but
because of
the brands of MB I used. Those with Intel on board
components have
been nothing but misery for me and MBs made for Intel chips
seem to be
more likely to have Intel on boards also.

Sounds like your single tasking stuff so it shouldn't
challenge the
CPU as much as the ram. Soon as you start swapping you'll
notice slow
downs. I'd buy a lower end chip and spend more on extra ram.
I'm
running 2 gigs in my newest box and haven't found anything
that chokes
it yet.
