I AM ATTEMPTING TO PERFORM A COMPLETE FRESH INSTALL (FEDORA
7) ON MY
COMPUTER WITH THE FOLLOWING SPEC'S:
NEC POWERMATE 8100
RAM = 128 MB
PROCESSOR - 500 MHZ
500-MHZ PROCESSOR 100-MHZ FRONT-SIDE BUS
ATI® 3D CHARGER„˘ (RAGE 3D IIC) 4 MB AGP BOARD
THE INSTALL IS FAILING ONCE THE RPM'S ARE BEING INSTALLED.
OUT OF THE
769 RPM'S TO INSTALL, ONE TIME I MADE IT TO 7 AND ONE TIME
TO 49
BEFORE THE INSTALL LOCKED UP.
DURING THE INSTALL PROCESS, I RAN A TEST ON THE DVD AND IT
PASSED. IT
CHECKED ALL THE DEPENDENCIES AND PASSED.
1) WHAT SHOULD I DO DIFFERENTLY?
2) IS THERE A WAY TO KNOW WHAT FILE THE INSTALL IS HAVING A
PROBLEM?
I ASSUME IF I NEW THAT, I MIGHT BE ABLE TO ADD OR REMOVE THE
SPECIFIC
PROBLEM FILE WITH A MORE APPROPRIATE FILE. OF COURSE, I AM
NOT CLEAR
ON HOW I WOULD DO THAT SINCE I STARTED WITH A DVD ISO.
AS A TEST, I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY LOADED FEDORA CORE 4 ONTO
THIS MACHINE
VIA CD'S. AFTER THAT WAS RUNNING, I ATTEMPTED TO UPGRADE
VIA YUM, BUT
AGAIN FAILED LIKE I MENTIONED ABOVE DURING THE INSTALL.
ANY IDEAS OR TIPS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

it may be the prob of your DvD (fedora 7 packedge) or hardware prob. **********wht the error msg r u getting?
1) try to install using different f7 DvD) 2) if prob not solve, u can use different DvD player.

Regardless of what the installation instructions might say,
you have
too little RAM. Try the install in text mode, but I'm not
sure even
that will work.

I HAVE DOWNLOADED THE ISO 3 TIMES AND HAVE BURNED DVD'S EACH
TIME, I
HAVE GOTTEN FARTHER IN THE INSTALL, BUT EACH TIME IT HAS
FAILED.
BASED ON THIS, I TEND TO AGREE WITH ZAVANDI ABOUT TOO LITTLE
RAM.
IF I WERE ABLE TO GET UP TO 256MB RAM, DO YOU THINK THAT
WOULD BE
ENOUGH?

Well, I can't guarantee you that... But,
obviously, the chances of
successful installation are much better. In addition to
text-mode
installation, you should try to select a very minimal set of
packages
(maybe even unselect some of the packages it offers to
install by
default), and then add them later to the running system
using yum.

I BOUGHT EXTRA RAM, SENDING THE RAM VALUE TO 384 MB. THAT
DID NOT
SEEM TO HELP. IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE
GRAPHICS
RAM. STILL STUCK ON INSTALLING FEDORA 7. I ATTEMPTED TO
ALSO INSTALL
FEDORA CORE 6 AND FEDORA CORE 5 BUT THEY ALSO GOT STUCK. I
DID
HOWEVER, GET FEDORA CORE 4 LOADED. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE TO
ANYONE?

I've installed FC6 on a machine with 128 megs of ram. Used
graphics
mode. Even run X on the machine. It's slow but not like
trying to run
windoze or something.
You are formating the / partition right? If it gets to
installing the
rpms and you have not formated / you will get error msgs and
install
will die. Another reason I always put / on a separate
partition.
Also do NOT install Xen on a machine like that. Xen is picky
about
hardware. Very picky and you don't have enough ram to run a
virtual
machine anyway. Just eats up disk space and ram having it
installed.
On a recent laptop install I ran into a problem with the lap
top over
heating. So had to do a much less ambitious install after
letting the
laptop cool down. Then using yum extender go out and add
packages in
groups of 10-20. Installation generates a great deal of
heat in the
CPU and with the hard drive. What I'd suggest you try is
uncheck many
of the packages. Just install Gnome and KDE. The basics.
Uncheck most
of the extras. Games, editors and such. Then use Yum
extender to add
and update in groups of 10-20. I suspect heat is your
problem.
