I have been running Darwin Ports on a g3 powerbook for the
past two years.
Recently I migrated Darwin Ports to a g4 powerbook.

I am now wanting to run Fink on the g4 powerbook without
creating
dependancy issues with Darwin Ports so as I can install some
new
packages like Image Magik and Gallery2 etc

Can anyone on this list advise me if running Darwin Ports
and Fink
together will create any conflicting dependancy issues?

Or is it best I remove Darwin Ports and rebuild all my
packages with Fink?

With Much Thanks

D.V.Rogers

The big problem is with crosstalk between the two: having
Fink
packages link to MacPorts libraries or vice versa. It's not
a
"dependency" per se, since the two systems track
packages separately.

You probably don't need to remove MacPorts; you can
temporarily rename
its directory when you build with Fink, and rename Fink's
when you
build with MacPorts.

Managing your PATH environment variable should be
sufficient. I don't
think any Fink package will look in /opt/local for include
files or
libraries by itself. Just make sure that /opt/local/[s]bin
is not in
your PATH when your build Fink things, and conversely that
/sw/[s]bin is
not in your PATH when you build for Macports.
