Apologies if my attempt at humor (the *nix merry-go-round)
ruffled
any feathers. In fact, this list has been one of the better
ones I've
seen for support involving anything related to *nix. I guess
my point
was that the bar seems to be set rather low in that arena
(at least
for people who aren't already pretty knowledgeable). It's
always hard
to put yourself in the other guy's shoes, but that
characteristic
terseness that most of the gurus seem to adopt can be pretty

maddening for somebody who's fumbling blindly around. Often
a reply
creates more questions than it answers. And, in the worst
cases,
there can be that lurking suspicion that the helper is
actually,
fiendishly, trying to drive the helpee crazy. NOT in this
case, I
hasten to add.

Also, I don't quite get why my installation is considered
nonstandard. Because it's not on the boot drive? I don't
remember
reading any cautionary remarks about that when installing
it. I tried
to make it pretty much plain vanilla, but somehow missed the
"don't
allow any spaces in your path" caveat. (It was stated
in there
somewhere, right?)

Anyway, it seems to work now. Thanks all.

It was my bad: I hadn't run an installer in a while and so
I didn't
realize that it would actually install on a non-boot drive
that way.
