Greetings,
I haven't seen anything about this for a couple of days, tried an
install of kexi, which tries to install ruby as a dependency, and it
failed again, any idea if anyone might be looking at this?

Somebody else is having an identical failure, so I'd hazard a guess
that it's something in the package that needs fixing.

Being a beginner, I think I need instruction on how to get ruby18 to
build. (I checked the FAQ but couldn't find anything on it.)

You'll need to get ruby18 to build. I checked about Xcode because a
bus error during a build is frequently a signature of something awry
with the compiler.
In that vein: you don't happen to have installed any non-Apple
compiler bits, right?

So then, what should I try next to successfully get KDE installed?
(By the way, I am a rank beginner at this, but I did notice that
enough of the basic framework was installed in my attempt to install
KDE that, for example, lynx is there and operable. But I could find
no sign of konqueror, kate, etc.)

I posted on fink-devel about it, as more of the developers read that list, and I've come up with a possible solution, which I want to run by the package's maintainer since it's not my package.
