Firefox user.js and proxy settings

Hello ,
        I wanted to develop an application which detected 
the fastest
proxy among a list of proxies  and then change the firefox
proxy
settings to the fastest proxy available while firefox was
running..


But I am facing a problem. I learnt  from various forums
that to
change the proxy settings of firefox, we had to  make a
chnage in the
user.js file. But any change  made to user.js  takes effect
only when
firefox is restarted .So what should I do tio make the
change
instantaneous?? i.e. make the change  effective while
firefox is
running and without the need to restart firefox.

I tried to change the pref.js file but even that did not
produce any
effect.

And its not that producing a  change in firefox proxy
settings  is not
possible while firefox is running. Extensions like
SwitchProxy   are
successfull in switching the proxy  even while firefox is
running.I
would like to know how to achieve this.
