Corrupted Images/Slow Browsing - any suggestions?

I have something quite strange going on with my computer.

The symptoms are:
Firefox displaying pages in a rather haphazard fashion-
often images
are misplaced or corrupted. See screenshot here
http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o
123/stevenretone/firefoxscreenshot-1.jpg
(anyone who's ever been on BBC news website will know it's
not meant
to look like this- those big 'watch' and 'listen' images
aren't meant
to be there, and other images are in the wrong place).
This isn't happening in IE.
Also suffering from terribly slow browsing- pages often take
an
eternity to load. This is mostly the same on IE too.
Don't think I have a virus - at least my Norton Internet
Security
hasn't picked anything up.
Have also checked against Spy/Adware and nothing showing
there. Only
formatted my hard drive a couple of months ago (also
because
applications were very slow). Have also run a registry fix
program
and nothing major needed doing.
Most other applications seem to be working OK and at normal
speed.
Firefox also often fails to open properly when started- it
tries to
load my home pages but fails and then gets stuck, hangs
around for a
while and is then difficult to close.
So not sure if it's anything to do with Firefox or something
more
problematic with my system as a whole.
All suggestions most appreciated!
Regards
Steven

About Performance:

Firefox startup is relatively slow when compared to IE,
because IE
has an unfair advantage of having many of its file already
loaded by
windows. Too many (or bad) extensions also can slow it
down.

Also, Could you post your PC's specs?

About Incorrect rendering:

Which version of Firefox are you using? I'm running
2.0.0.3, and the
anomalies you described aren't present on the BBC website
for me. Many
sites out there are designed with IE only in mind, but
lately, the
smarter ones are making it compatible with Firefox as well.
