I am puzzled about a flash project I am doing that involves
a fair number of
bitmap images which I thought I had kept low but has
produced a large fla
file of about 280 mb which when I save, takes about 3+
hours. I am trying to
figure out where the bloat is coming from. My working
process entails
versions of the same project which has a version just prior
to the bloated
version that is about 10 mb, has essentially the same scene
and actionscript
structure, about 80 library items compared to 128 items in
the bloated fla
file. I have gone through all the bitmap images in the
bloated version and
confirmed that none seem to be excessively large.
I am using flash pro 8. Is there any technique available in
this to sort
library elements or otherwise list things according to file
size so I can
determine from where this jump in fla file size is coming
from?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can't answer you question directly, but the red flag I see
is that it is
taking you over 3 hours to save a 280 mb file. Three minutes
maybe. But if
it is taking that long to save, or even publish, then you
might have a
corrupt file, corrupt Flash install, or possible hardware
problem.

280 MB is way too big for a .fla - with that much content,
you should
consider re-doing it so 95% of your media assets are
external. I try and
keep all my .swfs 250k or less when possible.

Thanks for the input from all. I saved to a different
version name and that
seemed to fixed it. It reduced from 290 mb fla file to a
30mb and saves in
seconds not hours. When published to swf resulted in a 6mb
file, which ran
fine. I am using flash for a museum computer based exhibit
that in this case
is running full screen on a 19" monitor so I am trying
to keep image files
as large as possible to have as much resolution as possible.
6mb for what is
a series of maybe 80 images seems pretty efficient to me,
but I am use to
using video and graphic images that typically result in much
larger files to
retain detail.
Again,
Thanks for the suggestions.
