Michele,
That's an interesting question. If you are freelance, you
count as your
own business entity. Meaning, they should expect the same
from you as
they would expect from hiring a fully staffed ad agency. If
it was in
specifically in your contract to release all art work
sources, then yes,
you are compelled to do so.
Otherwise, I would see it as just following the implied
protocol - you
hold the intellectual property rights to the originals. At
that point,
it's your decision to release the flas or not. (If you do, I
would
charge for it, as it sounds like they plan on hiring someone
on the
cheap to update it in the future).
I don't work freelance, but my company does do some Flash
work, and we
keep the flas. If the client wants to go somewhere else,
they are free
to take their swfs with them, but aught else.
Hope this helps,

imho, unless you obfuscate the code in your swfs really
well, or your client
has a pretty dumb 'replacement' developer, it doesn't make
much difference.
Give me any swf you make, and I can extract all of the
assets and
actionscript pretty easily, no fla needed.

That has been discussed many times before, I would check the
archives,
but my experience is usually, they hire you because they
have no clue
how to do it themselves, and in a sense, they are paying for
the .fla.
But it doesn't do them a whole lot of good to try and modify
it
themselves. Even if they pay someone else, that person
usually would
have a harder time modifying it, because they are unfamiliar
with it,
and if you have a good relationship with them, they should
come back to
you for the add-on work anyway. Unless it's a huge project,
I wouldn't
worry about it.
But of course the best thing to do is get everything in
writing and
signed off on first - that way there is no question later as
to who owns
what.
