| Flock Blog Spam |

Lately, I have gotten a lot of email of spam comment updates
to Flock
blog posts that I have subscribed to. So effectively, I am
receiving
Flock blog spam :(
Example:
http://www.flock.com/blog/0-7-4-incremental-rel
ease#comment-32103
Maybe try the Drupal Akismet module? Of course, I am not
writing this
to push the fantastic blog spam solution that my company
produces
Any solution will make me happy.
Looking forward to the next release,
Lloyd

Hi, Lloyd. I'm aware of the spam problem. We've tried a
couple of fixes
that haven't worked, and we're hoping to have something in
place fairly
soon. I had thought recently about turning off the
notifications to at
least prevent spam in the short term, if at the expense of
notifications
(we'd email any who have subscribed to topics to let them
know of the
change). What do people think about this idea?
Using the Akismet module is the next thing on my list to
try, actually,
but I've been reluctant to try it in production. Can you by
chance point
me to any case studies about the use of Akismet in Drupal,
how effective
it is, whether it results in page load slowdowns, etc.? If
not, I'll do
my own homework, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks for
bringing this up,
D

I would strongly advise the use of Akismet if spam is that
bad on the
blog -- even if there's a slow down (and there shouldn't be,
since it
filters spam on the server-side) it's worth it.
Ma.gnolia uses it to great success filtering out spammy
bookmarks and
everyone I know who has a blog uses it. WIthout it, you're
seriously a
sitting duck.

I manage a forum in my school and I use a challenge question
system: the
question have to be so easy any human can answer it but so
dynamic a bot
cannot. For example: "Of what color is the white
Santiago's horse?"
or "What's the name of the social browser this blog is
about?".
I think 5 or 6 different questions should stop spambots and
smpambots'
programmers from spamming!
What do you thing about this? It's a substitute to image
captchas, and much
better for people with viewing problems (like blind
people).

I instant messaged Richard Eriksson of Bryght and his
recommendation
is also Akismet.
"it doesn't result in page slowdowns
not for me at least, and I have mucho comment spam
99%+ gets caught by Akismet (alas not even Akismet is
perfect, but what is?)"
Richard understandably deals with a lot of Drupal production
system,
so although not concrete (case studies), he would not make
that
recommendation lightly.
Hope that helps,
Lloyd

I see. Well, you clearly have a spam not being caught
problem as well,

Great, thanks Daryl!
I had hoped that
Bug 4967 Forum subscription notices send even for
unpublished spam comments
had been fixed, but I now see that it hasn't.
I am surprised that Bug 4967 is not a well understood and
fixed
problem in the Drupal community.
Cheers,
Lloyd

I think Lloyd nailed it after Daryl's explanation -- it's
just a
matter of getting the subscription module to send out the
notifications only *after* a comment has been approved.

Ok, I understood it.
Can't you seek/debug the Drupal system installed (is it
PHP/MySQL based?) to
block the spam before sending notification emails?
I offer myself to do this if needed .

Sounds like a plan.
