| Multi word tags |

From a purely non-technical standpoint multi-word tagging
is a
natural way for users to interact with content and media.
The point
is that semantics matter, fundamentally, in how we deal
with,
categorize, organize and retrieve information.
I think i've come to recognize this in tagging flickr photos
more than
anywhere, but there is huge value to me to have it
implemented
wherever possible, and where it isn't, to convert
automatically to
single word tags.
So, i have to agree with Chris fpr no other reason that
adding multi-
word tags in all possible areas extends the semantic
capabilities of
the web and Imho extends its accessibility as a
consequence.
Huge value of exactly the type of thing Flock is taking a
leadership
role on.

I was asked to provide some specific ideas towards an
implementation,
so I'll offer some.
First, I think that Yojimbo and Mail.app have the best user
interface
in terms of tagging. You start typing, you can hit space,
and it's not
until you hit comma or enter that you "close" your
tag and start a new
one. Navigating around tags is fairly easy with arrow keys.
Autocomplete is always present and super useful as well.
Second, Terrell Russell wrote up Flickr's approach to this
problem,
maintaining both raw and clean tags through a normalization
process:
http://weblog.terrellrussell.
com/2007/06/clean-and-store-your-raw-tags-like-flickr/
I think he describes the algorithm pretty well; keeping both
sets
allows you to always show what someone typed in, but keep
the raw
version means that you have a consistent way of reducing
tags to a
unique, simplified form.
When it comes to sending tags to a remote web service, it
simply
requires you specifying whether the protocol accepts
"raw" or "clean"
tags, and you're done.
All in all, this seems pretty straightforward.

I really appreciate the feedback. I don't see a huge
challenge here,
especially if we are to simply enhance the existing tagging
facilities. Mr
Messina, can you comment on the proposed implementation? Do
we break
multiword tags into separate single-word tags when destined
for services
without multi-word support?
thanks

I'm not familiar with how Flock services currently handle
tagging
per-service, but I do know that many services require tags
in
different formats.
If Flock maintains "raw" and "clean"
tags, then you simply "flip a
switch" in the the service's profile to determine
whether you send the
clean or raw tags.
So, that's really a per-service/per-API setting.
I'd favor the multi-word tags over concatenated tags, simply
because
if people use concatenated tags, there's no effect to them
if you also
support multi-word tags (i.e. someone who imports tags from
delicious
into magnolia might continue single-word tagging while
everyone else
multi-word tags... that doesn't change things for other
people; if,
OTOH, you import my magnolia tags into delicious and
concatenate them
inside of Flock, I'm going to pretty upset at the perceived
loss of
data).

Ok,
so what's happened to Flock 1.0 I've installed the Public beta,
Nice modern loading splash but i prefer the old black one (looked more Futuristic)
Pages seem to be taking far longer to load.
And it seems to be requiring substantially more in system resources, With only 3 or 4 tabs open I'm getting constant freezes, and even after writing the first 4 lines of this Flock froze only to carry on after 20-30 seconds (at least it didnt shut down on me requiring me to reload ((which it has done twice in the last hour)))
I cant visually see anything different from the peek 1.0 but the mentioned problems are deffinately there, Granted I am converting 7 gb of Avi files, But I've never experienced this problem before and with 2gb of ram I didnt expect to experience anything like this.
The shut-downs (flock closing) happen regardless, but the freeze';s seem to be happening much more.
I hope things are already being looked into as a Beta certainly should not be taking steps backwards from alpha releases etc.
Sorry to sound so negative for my first private beta response, But It's like using the internet was in the early 90's.
cheers

Godfather,
Have you sent us a copy of your
profile? (Not sure if anyone has asked you for this yet.) Your results
are not typical of the installed base, and we would love to know specifically
what217;s happening. I suspect that you have some issues in your
profile that are causing the freezes/crashes. If we can see if your
profile has the same issues, or a new one that we don’t yet know about
yet, we can be more certain that we are fixing it with the work we are
currently doing. If it’s a new thing, we of course want to know
that too so we can jump on it.
If you want to help out and you haven̵7;t
sent your profile along, send it here, please:
http://dropbox.yousendit.com/flockprofiles
This helps a lot! Thanks.
