To the best of my knowledge, this has never been possible. If the computer is downloading/uploading something, it is obviously not "asleep."

I think you meant to ask, "do Macs still have seperate diplay and computer 'sleep' modes?" to which the answer is yes. You can set separate timings for display and regular "sleep" in the Energy Saver system preference panel.

What I meant was, While my Mac is downloading, I set it to sleep by
pressing the power button and clicking sleep mode.
I haven't noticed if any downloads are complete.

I just answered my own question. When my itunes was downloading pod-
casts items and I put my mac to sleep, it displayed stopped.
Oh well, I know now.
