I am not sure about this particular HD, but the last two LaCie
external hard drives I encountered (owned by MDMUG members) were not
S.M.A.R.T. supported.

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is hard
disk status analyzer and failure prediction software that is used to
monitor the health status of your hard drive.

This is one technology you want to make sure is available on any hard
drive you purchase.

Just and FYI.

In order to put OS X on older Macs (ones that did not come with OS X
such as beige G3s) you need to get a program called xPostFacto
(http://www.opendarwin.org/projects/XPostFacto/) and a copy of OS X
that is not machine specific.*

Also, most older non-OS X Macs will only work with 10.2 and and a few
will work with 10.3.

* the non-specific copy was the one purchased as a standalone
upgrade. the 10.2 disc has a large X filled with the Jaguar pattern
on a white backgraound and the 10.3 disc has a large X filled with a
silver/metallic pattern on a black background.

sorry... here's my post

hi all

Just curious, has wireless taken over wired? I'm leaning toward
making my home network wireless but I'm concern of data security,
hackers, etc.
I'm a graphic artist so I'll be transferring art files, backing up,
web surfing, etc. not to mention my wife works from home online.

Please share your thoughts

hi all,

I installed xpostfacto for OSX 10.3 and it' giving me a message that
I don't have enough disk space to install. I can not finish
installation, it restarts with the OSX icon and looking for more
space to finish the rest of installation. How can I start up from my
original OS 9.2 state?

Thanks for your help

Shut the machine sown. Then restart and hold the option key
down until
you see choices for start up disk. Select what t start up
from and
click the right arrow.

How much space is on the hard drive? What type of machine
are you
installing OSX on? You need atleast 3 gig for OS 10.3.9
to install
on. If it is for a G4 AGP you don't need to use xpostfacto
to install.

You can set up a wireless net work with a pass word. Us e
some thing
unique for a password. There are, I do believe, encryption
programs
out there that can be used for added security of
transmitting files.
Look it up on the web.
