Spare yourself a LOT of aggravation and simply download/install
NeoOffice.

It does NOT require X11, runs perfectly, is 100% compatible and
completely free of charge.

What aggravation? Once you obtain X11 and OpenOffice
it's relatively straightforward to use OpenOffice.
All you do is lauch the OpenOffice application program
by doble clicking on it, you'll get window asking if
you want to run X11 full screen or not, you piok
wichever you want (without fullscreen is probably the
easiest for those not familiar with X11), and then
OpenOffice launches (at times with a few other nice
terminal wiondows ).
