Could you clarify a bit what exactly you'd like to do?
If you just want to play a particular DVD that won't for whatever
reason play in DVD Player (wrong region, weird encoding etc), there's
the free VLC program (check MacUpdate for the latest version). Works
great.
If you're wanting to copy a DVD you made yourself back into a movie
format, there are literally a dozen or so utilities which range from
free to inexpensive depending on how slick you want it.
If you're looking to copy a commercial DVD onto your hard drive,
there is Handbrake which is free, but be aware that you're skating on
legal thin ice there (thanks to the ridiculous DMCA).
Most of these solutions depend on the $20 QuickTime add-on called
"MPEG-2 Playback Decoder" which is sold via download by Apple from
their QuickTime web page (apple.com/quicktime), so they may or may
not be truly cost-free.
