Possibly. Some monitors have compatibility problems with some Macs.
There is a third-party program (I think it's free, but you'll want to
check on that) called Switchres that may help you find out what
resolutions are really available for that Mac with that monitor. You
may also be able to "accept" a change in the resolution by hitting the
return key even if the "Accept" button is offscreen. Be careful to
stick with "standard" resolutions like 800x600, 1024x768 etc ... you
don't want to get the monitor stuck on a resolution the computer
cannot handle!

I don't know of ANY email program that will default to BCC, or any way
to make the current programs default to BCC, because you HAVE to have
a recipient (even if its yourself) in the TO field for an email to be
accepted. Emails without a valid address in the TO field will never
get sent because no ISP would accept them.

As for having a BCC available, I know Apple Mail will continue to show
the BCC field once it's turned on (ie it doesn't "forget" this after
each session), and I assume Thunderbird is the same way.

If you want to send an email out to a group of people where NONE of
the recipients can see ANY of the other recipients, just put your own
email address (or a known "junk" account's address) in the TO field
and all the others in the BCC field.

Cheers
Chas
