Where are the file previews generated?

It doesn't appear to be part of the kfile-plugin for a
specific file type, 
where does that code go?

See KIO::PreviewJob for the frontend and
kdebase/kioslave/thumbnail/ for the 
plugins implementing previews for the different filetypes.

See ThmbCreator in KIO. 
The previews are done by a kioslave with plugins that
implement the ThumbCreator servicetype,
and derive from the ThumbCreator base class.
