service. The Senior Network Engineer works as part of the
Network Operations
team and is responsible for network design, administration,
uptime,
performance, security, and troubleshooting. The ideal
candidate will have a
strong background in UNIX environments and possess in-depth
knowledge of
network protocol behavior as well as wired and wireless
experience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design networks and system solutions based on requests and
needs
- Participate and design for network performance and device
type selection
- Develop network designs, policies, solutions and
recommendations to match
network needs
- Research, evaluate and recommend network related tools and
emerging
network technologies
- Participate in rotating "on call" schedule
with other members of the team;
be willing to carry a pager
- Respond to outages both during business hours and in an
after-hours
on-call capacity
- Produce documentation for use in configuration, repair and
troubleshooting
of hardware, software and network operating systems
- Troubleshoot and resolve system problems
Required Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience:
- 3-5 years experience in networking, preferably in UNIX
environments
- Experience with FreeBSD 4, 5 Administration and tuning
- Experience with the following UNIX Software: Apache,
RequestTracker, BIND
and postfix
- In-depth knowledge of the following programming languages:
C, Python,
Perl, Bourne Shell, Expect
- Extensive hands-on experience with Cisco Routers, Switches
and Firewalls
- Excellent knowledge of networking technology such as
IPSec, PPTP, BGP,
HSRP and Multicast
- In-depth experience with networking tools such as ping,
traceroute,
RRDtool and Nagios
- Broad understanding of i386 hardware diagnostics and
repair
