Stored hard drive failure?

Two weeks ago I found an old hd on my shelf, which still
booted 
4.7 -RELEASE properly.
But I wonder if some kind of RAID 1 solution wouldn't be
more 
suitable for your situation: you use two hd's anyway and 
they would be kept in sync automatically.
