My account has a password and when I "su -" I go
right in as root without a
password prompt. What changed?

That worked! I thought I remembered giving root a
password!? So, if
you don't have a password set, one is not asked for?

Quite so. You should never ever leave root password
blank. In fact, FreeBSD as an OS and many programs
try to be secure and deny root access (in some ways)
if there's no password.

That's exactly why I just assumed that I had set a password
for root...I
didn't think it was possible to not have a password set.

Teo,

If you check your log files you may see something in
there about passwordless accounts.
