Hi all,

does anybody have a clue why Athreos-based Proxim Orinoco
11a/b/g
cards are not supported in 7.0?

pciconf -lv:

ath0pci0:22:0:0:       class=0x020000 card=0xaa1014b7
chip=0x0013168c
rev=0x01
hdr=0x00
    vendor     = 'Atheros Communications Inc.'
    device     = 'AR5212, AR5213 802.11a/b/g Wireless
Adapter'
    class      = network
    subclass   = ethernet

dmesg:

cardbus0: Expecting link target, got 0x0
ath0: <Atheros 5212> mem 0xbfeb0000-0xbfebffff irq 16
at device 0.0 on
cardbus0
ath0: [ITHREAD]
ath0: unable to attach hardware; HAL status 13
device_attach: ath0 attach returned 6

HAL status 13 says unsupported HW. Has anybody worked on
this?
Is it matter of just some missing ID or is there a more
fundamental
problem?

Thanks,
Petr

Your revision of the card is not supported. Bad luck, switch
to Linux.

It should work (devid 0x13 is supported by the hal in cvs).
You can try
the test hal at http://www.freebsd.org/~
sam. If that works please let
me know what it identifies the mac+phy as.

It took as long as till today for me to get my hands back on
that
HW. What I did I took HAL from your website, replaced
/usr/src/sys/contrib/dev/ath
directory and did
make buildkernel && make install kernel
(the machine is normal 7.0-RELEASE so I've build standard
GENERIC
kernel with only HAL changed)

The cards (this time I did the test with both SILVER and
GOLD
version of that Proxim card) obviously don't work even with
this HAL.
I've tried to gather as much information as possible - see
below.
Let me know if you need something more.

Thanks a lot,
Petr

Sam,

any clues about the problem below? I'm starting to suspect
the
problem might actually be something around CardBus, as
others
have reported similar problems:
http://www
.mail-archive.com/freebsd-stablefreebsd.org/msg91307.html
I'm also using T61p laptop. Maybe something that prevents
the cards
from being init'd properly?

Petr

Hal status 13 (HAL_ENOTSUPP from ah.h) means the info read
from the card
at attach indicated a device that's not supported. Given
the pci device
id I am guessing the card really is supported though vendors
sometimes
re-use old pci device id's with newer parts (0x13 is a
generate 5212
identified). If the hal simply couldn't read the necessary
registers
you could also get this error. If you can plug this card
into another
system and it works then you know it's an issue w/ support
on your
laptop. I happen to have a t61p and just tried a bunch of
different
cards (including one w/ this device id) and all the cards I
expected to
work so the best I can suggest is you try the card in
another laptop.

I don't have one of these cards to test but I do have cards
w/ just
about every Atheros part (except for the newest 11n parts).

it really looks like there's something weird about the
PCCARD slot
in (my) T61p. I tried with an older T41p running
6.2-RELEASE-p4 and
the card successfully works, see the verbose dmesg excerpt
(complete
one is below my signature):

So I assume it should work on 7.0 and the problem is
elsewhere...
any ideas on further debugging? Maybe if imp could
help with
this?

Thanks a lot,
Petr

I've just tried the following, if it is of any help:

RE: support for Proxim Silver wifi card

Sam,

I did a test on T61p with FreeSBIE 2.0.1 (i.e. FreeBSD
6.2-RELEASE)
and when plugged in, the driver return the same HAL 13
problem as
with 7.0-RELEASE. Given the fact that the same card works
on
6.2-RELEASE on T41p laptop, my conclusion is there's
something
broken with the PCCARD slot rather than the card. Can that
be
because it's dual PCMCIA/ExpressCard slot? Any hints for
further
debugging of the problem?

TIA,
Petr
