OTOH, if you check the "archive", you'll find
this:

http
://www.nvidia.com/object/freebsd_171.06.html

On that page:
"Release Highlights: Added support for GeForce 9600
GT."

I am testing this driver right now with 7600GT, seems like
still working.

I looked at the README file in the driver's archive, there
are no 9xxx
in the supported list.

This page has the latest Nvidia driver info for FreeBSD:
http://www.nvi
dia.com/object/unix.html

Click on the latest release for FreeBSD, then on the left
side of the
page click "Supported Products List." That should
take you to here
(for the 169.12 release)
http://www
.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html

The 9xxx chips do not seem to be supported yet. 8800 is the
max as
far as I can see. They may be supported soon, but maybe
not. If the
laptop is widescreen and you are going to be running FreeBSD
on it,
don't get it until the driver supports the graphics card.
Unless you
can test the laptop first with a FreeBSD live-cd and check
for sure,
you will probably not be able to run the monitor with a
widescreen
resolution.

Ah, that sounds like the nvidia I've grown to (dis)trust.
Going
through all the trouble of adding support for brand new
cards, and not
adding one simple line to a small documentation file...
Bah!

Just to clarify slightly: notice that this is driver version
171.06, while
the one dubbed "latest" (which is also in ports)
is 169.12. What it is
doing in "archives" is not quite clear. Anyway,
maybe the port could have
an update? The change is really straightforward -- just bump
the driver
version string and file size and checksums. I've been
testdriving it for a
while now, nothing unusual.

JFYI, XvMC in mplayer more or less works with this driver in
7.0-STABLE,
too -- if you forcefully compile it in. The quality is
surprisingly good,
even with bob-deinterlacing, though aspect ration gets
distorted in
fullscreen for some reason.

Bah!

Over 200k in weight might hardly qualify as
"small" But, from
what I
hear on the Net, they've been doing it for ages: seems like
their drivers
for Winblows contain text files with PCIIDs and card/chip
names. So, that
means you could find out about their new cards before they
are even
released just by reading the text files in fresh drivers
