Ilya, can you please check if this is still an issue with
latest
7-STABLE / 6-STABLE / 7.0-R / 6.3-R?

make me wonder if you're able to install a BIOS update as
the machine
seems to have some ACPI issues.
Also I'm pretty sure booting off umass is working fine in
general
as I'm tried it over the last weeks several times (but using
mostly
USB memory sticks - several different brands and only one
USB-HDD).
