Members of the US Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education endorsed a report that would undergo only minor copy editing and “wordsmithing” before it would be presented to Education Secretary Margaret Spellings later this month.

That agreement was nearly imperiled last weekend, though. Gerri Elliott, corporate vice president at Microsoft’s Worldwide Public Sector division, sent an e-mail message to fellow commissioners Friday evening saying that she “vigorously” objected to a paragraph in which the panel embraced and encouraged the development of open source software and open content projects in higher education.

I responded with a comment, so view it again and I'm at the
bottom.

Very nicely stated.  I look forward to the day when FCC members are on such committees.

I know what you mean, but while I may a cynic, I don't
think those
committees are worth capturing. I think it's much better
in the long
run simply to produce material that only a fool would
decline to use.
After all, since when does real change come within the
system?

Granted, neither of us is as outspoken as Richard Stallman.  Still, the publicity would be nice.
