Here is the article for your consideration:

Are You Setting up Your Blog for Long Term Profit?

I Blame Fortune magazine for everything. It was the
December, 2004 issue where I heard about several bloggers
who had begun to make decent money by writing and
publishing articles online. Without a second thought,
lured by imminent riches, I ran right out and, within 5
minutes, I had made the biggest mistake in blogging. This
mistake would cost me several months of important, income
earning, potential on my blog. Luckily I recovered and
when on to love my new career of blogger.

The mistake was to begin my blogging efforts with a free
blogging service like Blogspot.com or as it's commonly
know of as Blogger. There really isn't anything wrong with
Blogger itself; it is actually a great blogging platform.
It was easy to get set up and easy to operate and the
price was certainly right. There I was blogging away and
after a little while I started to earn a couple dollars
from pay per click ads. I started to take it more
seriously and began to think of my site as a business.
Then one as I was typing my site address into an email to
a friend... mydomain.blogspot.com and it hit me, I don't
even own this site! I was only using Blogspot.com's
website and calling it mine. Could I sell it? No. And if I
wanted to move it, I would lose all the search engine
rankings that I had worked hard to build up.

It's a common mistake and luckily for me I had only been
blogging for about 4 months so it wasn't too painful to
leap from my freebie site and buy my own domain name and
start over. My first thought was that it was going to be
expensive but I was surprised to find out that a domain
name, especially if you shop around for a special deal or
coupon, can be found for well under $10 a year and I was
able to find a hosting service for under $5 a month. That
wasn't too bad at all; I simply traded a couple mochas a
month to increase the potential of my new online business
dramatically.

The other fear I had was that setting up my own
"real"
blog was going to be difficult and beyond me technically.
While it is true that it is a bit more complex than
filling in a form and hitting "sign up" it is
not really
difficult if you are willing to do a bit of reading and
able to follow simple directions. Most hosting companies
have an amazing tool called Fantastico that completely
automates the installation of a WordPress blog. I had
expected this to be the hard part but it actually turned
out to be extremely simple.

It really turned out that my initial concerns for not
wanting to get a proper blog were almost completely
without merit. The only issue I can see holding back a
new blogger is commitment. A lot of people try out
blogging for a while and only some seem to like it enough
to continue on. That's where Blogspot could be useful as
a test to see if a love of blogging grows on you before
you commit money to your own site. Just don't wait too
long before making the decision because the longer you
wait the longer it will take you to re-establish the
search engine "weight" of your articles and your
site in
general.
