;) ;) ;)

It's unbelievable that there are not GNOME groups in the
USA. Lucky me
I'm not a US citizen, otherwise I would be ashamed for being
reminded
by Europeans, Oceanians and even Asians living in Canada
about this.

Alright, coordinating a nation-wide group migh be too
complex but what
about articulating some activity around cities/states?

Boston had the ingredients at some point, what is the status
now?

Not that there are not GNOME hackers in San Francisco Bay
Area.

What would be next, Oregon?

Where else can one find 3 GNOMErs nearby in the US? Show
up!

Good call Quim.

Anyone listening in on the marketing list in the Seattle
area?
I would like to start a Pacific Northwest Gnome group.
Not that I have the time, but if I could find an equally
motivated
partner, I bet we could pull it off.

We used to have a Mono Seattle group.

Cheers,
	Eitan.

I think there is probably some fair amount of GNOME people
in SF.
Certainly people like David and Christian.

Oregon is somewhat weak. We have a strong free software
community
but very weak in desktop. Maybe 3 of us possibly. Much as
I would
like to think that I'm a tour de force by myself...

I think we have maybe a couple more up here in Seattle, so
like I said,
maybe a Pacific NW group?

Possibly, something can be done.. although my volunteer time
has dwindled a lot over the years. We can talk offline.

They don't count. They
don't really hack on GNOME just the
infrastructure bits. We're talking about GNOME volunteers.

That said, the three of us are trying to build a generic
free
software community along with diverse others but it has been
going
very slowly. Portland is very free software friendly. The
mayor
reputedly (and I've confirmed with other people) runs KDE at
work.
I'm quite happy about that because it means he'll be open to
having
a strong desktop community and might be able to fund or
advertise
conferences.

If we make progress, I'll try to keep people abreast of
things.
But none of us currently have time to pursue it very
aggressively
Working with governments tend to take a while.

If people in the area are interested, feel free to email
me.

I wasn't expecting a debate about it, but if they consider
themselves part of the community then of course they are.

Let's not forget Eric Anholt btw ;) My personal hero.

Ubuntu Live is July 22-24th in Portland, OR. You could
start with that.

Maybe in Europe San Francisco seems not far from Seattle,
but from here
SF seems like worlds away ;)

I know two more Mono hacker types here in Seattle. they used
to actually
have a local Mono group.

I need a bit more inspiration about this. Obviously it needs
to be
end-user focused. I don't think we want another LUG with
system admins
trading Ethereal secrets and useful regular expressions. But
what would
we trade/do? GNOME release parties?

Sri, you are probably right about Ubuntu live, that would be
a good
start with that. I hope to get down to the expo floor at
least for one
day. Maybe I'll print something up to hand out to locals
there.

Yeah, I'll start. Not much time in the coming months.
Hopefully it will gain speed in the summer. Any other local
enthusiastic
diehards? please shout out.

Eitan.
