what about phpgnuedu ?
That would do the job of being different from "GNU
Edu".
But, aside from that, it is less clear and somewhat
misleading.

ok but "gnuedudbm" (GNU Edu Database Manager) is

I take it that you figure the program is much more than a
browser, so
"edubrowser" is now out. (I thought it was an
OK name; and once
incorporated into Emacs would become a reasonable program,
like W3M
mode -- "w3m" does run on its own, but I don't
like it, although many
others do.)
That leaves "gnuedu", although that name is
sufficiently close to "GNU
Edu" that after installing improvements, the program
will have to be
backwards compatible for longer than otherwise.
Pehaps the longer "gnuedudata" would be better.
Or "gnuedm".

not really
although I like the idea that anybody can understand there
is a
relationship between the database and the software, so I
would prefer
the names to be close to each other,
yet edubrowser is still an option for me

but it's not the data it's the software...
GNU Edu is the data; we need a name for the software

Yes
Actually I wanted "gedu", but gedu.org is taken,
and it is a school :-(
and anyway "gedu" does not sound well

Why do you need a shorter name than GNU Edu Database
Manager?
Is there a specific purpose for which the name must be
shorter?
If so, you could use GNU Edu Database Manager as the normal
name, and
abbreviate it (to "gnuedudbm" or "gnuedu
dataman" or something else)
when you need the shorter name.

Hello Mr Stallman (rms gnu.org) ;

May I try to play with all of you by suggesting
GNU Edam
Since it's the name of a cheese, the name gives us a double
meaning,
supposed to be a little funny and all...
It uses a selection of the letters in the group of words GNU
Edu
Database Manager, with respect of the order of those
letters, so it
might be easily remembered.
And when I use the google search engine entering "GNU
Edam", I have a
total of 0 result found.
It is rather short.
It has absolutely no connection with software at first
sight, but we
do have famous examples of project names going down that
road, don't
we ?
I hope that helps, or at least doesn't disturb,
Best regards,

OK, it is not the best cheese ever, but... ;)

Not me, I like the name too (it suggested «undone» as the
opposite of
«made», though, and «dame»). What I find missing, as we have
the
cat(alogue) and the cheese, is the mouse. How can we put a
mouse in
the story? We teachers would be the mice that eat the
cheese, wouldn't
we?
