Along., with of course, just what command you are running
and how you are running them.

What permissions do I need to check exactly? Is the mbox
file sufficient? Are there lock files needed? What else is
going on in mailutils?

I used
mail (interactively, without parameters)
pop3d -i (in xinetd)
imap4d -i (in xinetd)

I did not modify any config files regarding those programs,
if they exist.

Mailutils should have enough permissions to create lockfile
and
temporary expunge file in /var/spool/mail. In your case, it
will
be able to do so only if you are a member of group 'mail'.
Are you?
Try to create an arbitrary file in /var/spool/mail to
verify.

Sergey

I found out that once I write /var/mail/hiran while the
other time I
write /var/spool/mail/hiran.
Well, Ubuntu symlinks /var/spool/mail -> /var/mail.

I was not member in the group mail. This is now fixed. I can
create and
delete other files in that directory now.
Still I get the same message:

Error expunging:609: Input/output error

I did not know this is a valid command. But yes, it shows

Of course I do this as user hiran without sudo...

I'm sure there is plenty of room left.

hiranserver:/var/spool/mail$ df

So it is not access rights, it is not disk space. What
next?

Hiran does not use MH utilities. He uses "mail".

Nope, this is a very risky advice. And it is useless (see
below).

All files there are already in group mail. Besides, it is
irrelevant,
the only file in interest is Hiran's maildrop.

Re: Troubleshooting mailutils

Hi there.

A few days ago I raised the question how to find out what is
going on in
pop3d, imap4d and mail, as all of them fail expunging
deleted mails from
my mailbox with the error message

Error expunging:609: Input/output error

Now I realise that the error no longer occurs. What I did
was to perform the suggested modifications, checking that
the problem was still there. Just today I had to reboot the
system and I see that messages are expunged correctly.

So I cannot reproduce the problem, but as long as it's gone
I will be happy. Thank you for all who helped.

Hiran

How? By using "rmm"?

Maybe it would be good to try to change all the files in the
directory to the new group specification. Please try this
and let us know how it goes.

Try something like
  $ chgrp mail  <dir_name>/*         # where I assume
mail is the group name

You may have changed the group you're working under, but not
that which the older files were created with. Can you test
this?
