It has been so long since I have touched the Codex, much
less Wikipedia, that I
do not remember how they do them or how I had suggested we
do them.

I just looked over some of the discussion we had before and
it seems we had
agreed to drop the idea of using namespaces because turning
them on at this late
point in the game would ruin all of our current work.
Namespaces would have
allowed us to do more specific searching of only Gallery #,
etc, but turning
them on now would make all current wiki pages with the
namespace's prefix
inaccessible.

Instead we had decided to prefix our categories with the
base project (Gallery
#) and then add just specific subcategories to that. We
would try to use only
one category prefix unless multiple categories with the name
end-name applied to
different sub-categories. For example:
Gallery #evelopme
nt
Included page example: Coding standard, Coding
guidelines, etc
Gallery #evelopme
nt:Themes
Included page example: How to develop a theme, theme.inc
basics, etc
Gallery #:Themes
Included page example: Matrix, Floatrix, etc

We had started work on categorizing the pages using this
system so we should be
able to look to the existing system for how to continue
doing it.

There were several ideas on how to deal with categories and
what-not. One thing
that was mentioned was the idea of adding badges to each
page to indicate which
version of gallery that page applies to. Another idea was to
put the category
inclusion text in a template so that we could add other text
to each page or
easily change the category name for all those pages. I think
we had decided the
category templates was too much work, and we never got
around to designing a
badge template.

Before we bury namespaces, let's have a short discussion or
at least a vote
about it on Thursday during the docs meeting.

I think it doesn't matter if namespaces mask current
content.
- I think searching limited to a specific namespace is too
useful to just
drop it
And to fix the problems:
- Current content would be relocated before
- Search will find the existing pages
- That leaves existing links as the only problem. We could
submit a new
sitemap to Google and update all internal links.
That sounds like some work though.

How bad is the namespace issue anyway?
And couldn't we use namespace names that have nearly no
conflicts with
existing content?
E.g. "G2", "G1", "GR", or just
using underscores / dashes / whatever to get
no conflicts. Or very long namespace names like
"Gallery_2_Area".

If you guys feel this has been discussed too much already,
