There is no elegant way to hide backup files, but there is
"Tools->View Filter".

Depending on the editor being used, some allows you to set a
prefix for the 
backup file. So you could prefix backup files with . and
they will be hidden. 
The editor part of Kate (katepart, used in kwrite, quanta,
kdevelop) allows 
this if I remember correctly.

Yes, Kate does allow the prepending of a dot to a filename.
But some
non-kde apps, notably Open Office, do not.
