First read the instructions about data required when asking
for help. Then look at your config.log, same as anyone else
would have to do, to see what clues are there.
Can't tell from your description, but a common problem in
RH9 installations is that people don't install the dynamic
pthreads support, which came in a separate patch. No idea
why people continue to use RH9.
You did check the consequences of setting CXX=cc ?
