ftp server stopped working

I am puzzled as to what happened and how to fix the problem.
 The ftp 
server has stopped working.  Nothing shows up
/var/log/messages. 
Restarting service or the server does not help.  When
checking the service 
GUI, it says is "dead".

The only changes, I am aware of is updating of all programs
via the GUI
