backup using tar RHL FC3

The question was:--

Does anyone know how to create a "tar ball" or
backup of important
partitions like var and usr to a location either on the
server or onto
another machine (like a windows machine)?

It was not regarding to take backup of windows partition.

Please read properly than comment it.
