Thanks Vladimir, but what is the command to stop ppp0? How
do I find out 
the shell equivalents of desktop commands?

I believe on RedHat type systems, it is something like
"ifup ppp0" to start or 
"ifdown ppp0" to bring down the interface.

Read through
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-ppp
and you will see what files hold configuration info (like
ifcfg-ppp0).
