Are you getting an error message or just no volume? just by chance you may need to raise the volume on the items that were off while in the alsamixer.

What I have found is that sometimes you need to run: # alsamixer and check if there are any items in the MUTE state.
Use the arrow keys to move between items. Up top you will see if it says [Mute]. If so, hit the M key and it will unmute.
To exit hit Esc key.

This is snd-hda-intel using the ALC861VD Realtek codec. From ALSA documentation,
you may need to specify the appropriate model:

        ALC861VD/660VD
   ; 3stack 3-jack
        ; 3stack-dig ; 3-jack with SPDIF OUT
   ; 6stack-dig ; 6-jack with SPDIF OUT
   ; 3stack-660 ; 3-jack (for ALC660VD)
         ; 3stack-660-digout 3-jack with SPDIF OUT (for ALC660VD)
  ; lenovo Lenovo 3000 C200
; dallas Dallas laptops
      ; hp ; HP TX1000
        ; auto ; auto-config reading BIOS (default)

There are several forums discussing the subject:

Good luck ...
