Problem upgrading larger packages on dialup

I'm having problems upgrading larger packages (vlc, mplayer)
from freshrpms on
my dialup connection. I have no problems with smaller
packages. Is there some
sort of timeout, where I have only so long to download each
package?

Doing an apt-get dist-upgrade, which includes the upgrading
of packages from
freshrpms, any larger packages cause problems. I get about
10% of the
download, then something like "connection closed from
server end". If I do an
apt-get install vlc (for example), I often have to rerun
apt-get install vlc
up to 12 times before I finally get the package download
completed.

Anyone have any suggestions (apart from moving to livna) as
how this might be
resolved.

btw. I had a similar problem upgrading Wine from the
sourceforge site, mind
you, sourceforge is a whole bundle of fun on it's own.

Without reading your whole post, and not knowing your
distro/version, or
which mirror you are retrieving from:

set /etc/yum.conf keepcache=1
yum install yum-downloadonly
yum --downloadonly update
until it has all rpms pre-downloaded
then repeat without the --downloadonly.

This should {eventually, if you have issues} get all the
rpms your
machine needs to complete the update.

As I said, I'm using Apt, not Yum, and only have the one
line for the
freshrpms repo in my /etc/apt/sources.list, as below.
rpm http://ayo.freshrpms.net/ fedora/linux/8/i386 freshrpms

82 upgraded, 5 newly installed, 0 removed and 0 not
upgraded.
Need to get 193MB of archives.
After unpacking 80.8MB of additional disk space will be
used.

As you can see, the smaller freshrpms packages downloaded
ok, but the problem
is with vlc (8026kB), then with mplayer (4869kB). All the
fedora updates are
eventually downloaded, which just leaves the partially
downloaded vlc, and
mplayer to complete the downloading stage, and which are
preventing the
apt-get dist-upgrade continuing with installing the
updates.

This isn't the first time this problem has occured, and I
also see it on F7.

Now this is what becomes a bit time consuming. In the case
of vlc, I run
apt-get install vlc, and get about another 10% downloaded
before "Error
reading from server Remote end closed connection".
After a succession of
apt-get install vlc, I eventually get the whole package,
which is installed.

Now I have to run apt-get dist-upgrade again so that all the
downloaded fedora
updates will be installed.

So going back to the subject again. Is there some sort of
timelimit for
downloading individual packages from the freshrpms servers?
A time limit that
would not affect broadband users, as the packages are
downloaded so quickly,
but does affect dialup users (like myself), as the larger
packages take so
long to download.

Cordially.

Nigel.
