Committed, appears to result in something working on Darwin.
 Didn't
check the QA checks yet.  Can someone on AIX sync and
compile zlib to
see what happens (with unpatched portage)?

Seems to work here (aix53), thanks!

Btw. AFAICT there's no need to change to the target
directory, as (GNU?)
'ln' can create symlinks to not-resolveable targets:
