Time for another problem  :-(

On this newly installed system (amd64, not ~amd64) I have
both 32- and
64-bit Firefox browsers, and I can't get java plugged into
either of them.

$ eselect java-nsplugin list
Available 32-bit Java browser plugins
Available 64-bit Java browser plugins
$ java-config-1 -L
The following JDKs are available for generation-1:
*)      Blackdown JDK 1.4.2.03 [blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03]
$ java-config-2 -L
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
1)      Blackdown JDK 1.4.2.03 [blackdown-jdk-1.4.2]
2)      Sun JDK 1.5.0.11 [sun-jdk-1.5]
*)      Sun JRE 1.6.0.01 [sun-jre-bin-1.6]
$ grep -r nsplugin /etc/* 2> /dev/null
/etc/make.conf: logrotate mono mp3 mpeg nls nptl nsplugin
nvidia ogg opengl
pdf png sdl smp spell svg truetype unicode usb
/etc/make.profile/no-multilib/package.mask:net-www/nspluginw
rapper

(That make.conf line is a continuation of the USE= line. I
don't believe
this is a no-multilib system.)

$ ls -l /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 50 2007-07-09
17:56 /etc/make.profile ->
../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2007.0
$ sudo emerge -1av sun-jre-bin blackdown-jdk sun-jdk

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] dev-java/sun-jre-bin-1.6.0.01-r1
USE="X alsa (-nsplugin)" 0
kB
[ebuild   R   ] dev-java/blackdown-jdk-1.4.2.03-r15
USE="-doc (-nsplugin)"
0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] dev-java/sun-jdk-1.5.0.11  USE="X alsa
-doc -examples -jce
(-nsplugin)" 0 kB

Any ideas on why I get (-nsplugin) on all these? I have
USE=nsplugin
in /etc/make.conf, but it's being overridden. What's doing
that? Have I
inadvertently got no-multilib somehow? I've followed the
java upgrade guide
and its friends, but they shed no light on this one.

They are (-nsplugin) because they're masked on amd64, for
the 32bit
browser plugin use emul-linux-x86-java. Blackdown had a
64bit plugin,
it still exists, but is masked too because of security
issues.

Ah, I see. Thanks. (Just fetching that 60MB file now.)

I think that emul-linux-x86-java doesn't work with 64-bit
firefox browser. It just works with mozilla-firefox-bin,
which
is 32-bit.

There is a wrapper that alow 32bits plugins on 64bits
Firefox. Just
don't recall right now the name of it.

I think that emul-linux-x86-java doesn't work with 64-bit

that's incorrect!!!! the emul-linux libraries are 32 bit libraries that are to be used with firefox amd64 ; not firefox-bin for the conversion of 32 bit plugins to 64bit plugins.... or better explained, they're a layer for executing 32bit plugins on 64bit firefox compiled.... that's why they're a dependencies for the nspluginwrapper library....
anyway, just use the howto flash9 and java with firefox on amd 64 from http://gentoo-wiki.com/

You're both not correct. emul-linux-x86-java is, like stated
at the
description of the package the "32bit version Sun's
J2SE Development
Kit". So, firefox, which is compiled for 64bit can't
use the plugin
directly, but mozilla-firefox-bin, which is also 32bit can
use that
plugin. The reason is, that no application compiled for
64bit can be
linked with something complied for 32bit.

Some people wanted however have 64bit firefox/konqueror/...
and also use
  32bit plugin's like flash. (blackdown-jdk for 64bit has a
nsplugin,
which don't work with current firefox versions anymore. So
in the past,
that wasn't a problem, 64bit firefox and java.) So they
wrote
nspluginwrapper, which allow to use any 32bit nsplugin. This
means, with
nspluginwrapper you can use emul-linux-x86-java's nsplugin
in 64bit firefox.

As a side note, the emul-packages bring some precompiled
32bit libs,
which are often present on any linux system. Those are
needed for
packages, like opera, skype, wine, ... which are only
available for
32bit. Search the list for more detailed answers about, why
emul
packages exists, this was often discussed in the past.

you're right, at least some applets works. Some of them
don't (red cross
on the upper corner, complained about unknown major version
- guess that
special applet needed sun wm - it was sun's test applet),
others crashed.
