Hi,

I just had a system board replaced on my Thinkpad and now
the ethernet
interface does not exist. The hardware test is fine...

whin I issue lspci, I get this:

02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82540EP
Gigabit Ethernet
Controller (Mobile) (rev 03)

I have the e1000 driver compiled in the kernel.

my /etc/conf.d/net file is this:

config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
modules=( "ifconfig" )
modules=( "wpa_supplicant" )
wpa_supplicant_eth1="-Dwext"
config_ESSID=( "dhcp" )
dhcpcd_ESSID="-t 5"

and when I issue /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start, I get this:

# /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start
 * Starting eth0
 *   Bringing up eth0
 *     dhcp
 * network interface eth0 does not exist
 * Please verify hardware or kernel module (driver)

What could be happening?
Does this interface support 100mb? or is it gigabit only?

Actually, I would love to find a gnome gui that my user can
use to
manage both the eth0 and wireless eth1 interfaces. I have
not found
working examples of this anywhere yet. any sugesstions?

Thanks
rick

Have you made sure you installed the new kernel and rebooted
into it? I
know, silly questions, but we ought not rule out the obvious
possibilities.

Hey I recently had a problem like this with my wireless card.

However make sure that the eth0 device is even there, either by looking at
ifconfig
or
cat /proc/net/dev

But the issue I had was found to be a problem with the new udev that found device processes to run on startup.
What solved this was removing net.eth0 or net.<device> from the boot/default run level and letting udev finding it and deal with it correctly.

But this was also with a wireless card, sorry if it doesn't help.

A couple of points:

1) Is the ethernet definately eth0 and not eth1?
2) GNOME *has* a GUI to keep track of network interfaces. I
forget what it's called but I have the latest GNOME on my PC
and it comes with a little program to monitor and play with
network interfaces.
3) Check `dmesg` after you try to load the kernel module.
Any messages?
