Just to clarify it: You do not neet root for emerge tinc,
you need it  
for installing other software you need and for running it
(at least  
as far as i know).

This other software is not in portage I assume?

"This other software" is <http://www-u

tuntap/>. It's not in portage and it's not trivial to
write an ebuild  
since it's OS X only and consists of 4 .pkg files. I don't
know, how  
to handle theese.

The best way to handle this (in my opinion) is to ask the
user to  
install that drivers. A linux kernel is also not enough, you
always  
need to activate tun/tap devices. Maybe we could skip the
dependency  
on virtual/linux-kernel on darwin and add some einfo/elog in
this  
case pointing to <http://www.tin

tinc_2.html#SEC13>.
