-u system corrupts many links

Hi group,

I notice that after emerge -u system all the links of
the form /usr/bin/i386-pc-linux-gnu/*,
/usr/i386-pc-linux-gnu/bin/* and
/usr/i386-pc-linux-gnu/lib/* point nowhere(flashing
white on red).

Since this is a 686, should I worry? Is it safe to
just delete them or should they be fixed, and how?
