This explains it all, only I'm still curious why even with
version 6.0 I'm still getting both installed just fine.
Hardly look at the messages since Gentoo installs while I'm
dreaming. Just as nice without complaining as my dreams are.

Only when doing an update later it starts to complain. Since
Gentoo version 5.0 I'm having this on all systems.
Regardless the choice of installation.

Do you have pam in your use flags? If so, it would make
shadow do the job
of pam-login, thus creating the problem. If not, then they
are both
welcome to be there.
