Yes, I was wrong. AFAIR the only java compiler and the HotSpot VM have been just released under GPL (http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/project_overview.jsp). Nevertheless this could be a step forward in "java quest on alphas"

Some parts of the code are licensed under proprietary 3rd party licenses and cannot be released under GPL therefore. We can expect that some development will be needed in order to have functional Java release under GPL.
