Layer from Background...

I was following a tutorial for a PS project and I was doing
fine till I
ran across this instruction
"Right-click on the "Background" layer and
select "Layer from
Background...".

At the "New Layer" window, click "OK".
The "Background" layer has now
become "Layer 0".

Change the "Opacity" of "Layer 0" to
50%."

My question is how do I Create a layer from a background in
the Gimp.

The Idea is to take the backround layer and turn it into a
layer with a
50% opacity and then put a transparent layer on that.

Then draw on the transparent layer and import that as a
texture into a
3d graphics program. In this case Wings3D/

AND THE ORIGINAL "BACKGROUND" LAYER IS GONE!?

TECHNICALLY THE BACKGROUND LAYER *IS* ALREADY A LAYER.

DOES THE FOLLOWING WHAT YOU WANT?

€’ RIGHT CLICK ON BACKGROUND LAYER †’ ADD ALPHA CHANNEL,
€’ CHANGE THE OPACITY OF THE BACKGROUND LAYER TO 50%,
€’ OPTIONALLY RENAME IT TO "LAYER 0",
€’ AND ADD A NEW TRANSPARENT LAYER ABOVE IT.

Unless I am misunderstanding this can't you duplicate the
background
layer and do with it as you wish? I do it all the time when
I want to
cut something out with a transparent background or want to
screen
something on top of the background or use additives and
such.

Yes, then you simply hide the actual backgound! Especially
when you want to
add something 'behind' the 'background'.

Sounds simpler to me!
