This probably is just folklore.

Rather wrong assumption. The more fonts you have on your machine, the more likely it is that you have a broken one.

But then it isn't the number of fonts as such that is a problem, is it?

i've got over 3000 fonts on my machine and it stalls on startup at fonts
everytime, once it finds them all then the program finishes loading; so it's
not folk lore. even ms and other graphic software vendors (adobe for one)
says not to load many fonts because it will cause your system and program to
slow down.

But you say it just stalls for some time; the question was whether
"too many" fonts can make gimp crash, wasn't it?
Anyway, have you tried removing your fontconfig cache file and letting
it be recreated? Isn't this what the FAQ suggests?

i never said gimp crashed, i said it stalled at the loading of the fonts.
