Let me say that I had Gimp working on my XP, and then one day I
started getting message:

"Pango-ERROR **: file shape.c line 75 > (pango_shape): assertion
failed: (glyphs->num_glyphs > 0)"

I followed the instructions as mentioned at:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/faq.html , and made sure only tahoma
font was being used. I also tried instaling GTK without the MS Windows
Engine option which I think is what GTK-Wimp component refers to.
Trying these things made no difference. This was happening with GTK+
2.8.9 and Gimp 2.2.10 .

Next thing I did was to install current versions, GTK+ 2.8.18 and Gimp
2.2.13. I now do not get the pango-error message but Gimp startup
takes 28 seconds, which I assume is because it is having a problem
with fonts, because the Gimp window displays all text characters as
boxes. I can't read anything. I should say that when running Gimp as a
different user there is no problem with text display. I also tried
removing the .gimp-2.2 folder and .fonts.cache-1, as well as copying
these from the user which works, all with no success. All this to me
seems to suggest it is something in the user directory but I have
looked and do not see anything else that is Gimp related in there.
Again I am using tahoma font and I am not running any strange XP
display settings.

I would appreciate if someone could give me some ideas on how to
resolve this, as I do prefer to use Gimp over Photoshop Elements.
